Official California Bicentennial Gold Piece $50 Slug |
| Official California Bicentennial Gold Piece. This California Gold Piece is a solid 18K Gold commemorative patterned after the famous 1851 $50 Gold Slug minted in San Francisco, one of the first gold pieces minted in California. The gold coming from the rich California mines through the San Francisco mint contributed to the economic growth of the western United States. This front of this medal carries the words "Official Bicentennial Gold Piece Commemorative" around the famous eagle design. The reverse of the medal shows an image of the old San Francisco Mint building. Minted by the United States Gold Corporation, the medal weighs 50 grams of 18K gold. It has the usual handling marks and toning from being kept in its original box. Many of these were melted during the late 1970s during the bullion boom of that period. |
